Overview
Adding a text overlay to a media asset (image or video footage) is an easy and versatile way to convey a message, enhance understanding, and highlight specific elements in a scene. In the video that you are creating, you can add a text overlay to a media asset and then format the added text according to your preferences.
Among many use cases, you can use this feature to add captions or annotations that provide additional information and context to a scene.
Note that a text overlay can only be added to a media asset within a media placeholder. A text overlay cannot be added to an empty media placeholder.
Adding a Text Overlay to a Media Asset
1. | Open the relevant video in the Studio. |
2. | From the scene line-up, select the relevant scene. |
3. | Select the media asset that you want to add a text overlay to. |
4. | On the toolbar, click the Add a Text or Media Overlay icon. ▶ If this option is disabled, this indicates that the current scene does not support adding a text overlay. See Notes below for more information. |
5. | Select Text Overlay. |
A text placeholder is added to the media asset. ▶ The default position of the placeholder is based on design considerations but can be changed according to your preferences. |
|
6. | On the toolbar, click the Edit text icon and add the text that you want to display. ▶ Just as in a standard text placeholder, the text in this type of placeholder can be personalized. See the following articles to learn more: Configuring Text with a Personalization Token Text: Message by Audience |

7. | (Optional) Move and resize the placeholder according to your preferences. |
8. | (Optional) Format the text according to your preferences. |
Moving and Resizing a Text Overlay
To move, grab the text placeholder and drag it to the new location.
As you drag the placeholder, note the following guides on the media asset:
The horizontal and vertical guides help you place the text placeholder precisely on the media asset while the four borders designate the recommended margins. The text placeholder can be placed beyond the borders but not beyond the media asset.
To resize the height and width simultaneously, drag one of the corner handles until the placeholder is the size you want.
To resize the height and width independently, drag one of the side handles.
After the placeholder is resized, the text size is increased or decreased accordingly.
Deleting a Text Overlay from a Media Asset
1. | Select the media asset whose text overlay you want to delete. |
2. | Select the text overlay that you want to delete. ▶ You will know that the text overlay is selected when you see a blue dashed border. |
3. | On the toolbar, click the Delete placeholder icon. ▶ You can also press Delete or Backspace. |
The text overlay is deleted. | |
Notes
1. | Only text can be added to a text overlay inside a media asset. To add a logo or any other image, see Adding a Media Overlay to a Media Asset. |
2. | More than one text overlay can be added to a single media asset. To add an additional text overlay, select the media asset again and then click the Add a Text or Media Overlay icon on the toolbar. |
3. | Multiple text overlays within a media asset can be overlapped. |
4. | If the media placeholder is hidden, the text overlay within it is hidden as well. |
5. |
There are several layouts that include a media placeholder that serves as the background for one or more standard text placeholders. In these layouts, it is not possible to add a text overlay directly on the media asset. The reason: with standard text placeholders already positioned on the media placeholder, adding a text overlay can crowd and make it challenging to work on the scene. |
6. | If you attempt to switch a scene layout that currently has a text overlay on a media asset, you will see indications on the layouts that do not support this functionality. If you select one of these layouts, you will no longer be able to add a text overlay to the media asset. |
