Setting Up the Input Fields Library

About this article:
This article provides detailed guidance for step 5 of the template creation process: Set Up the Input Fields Library.

Overview

The Input Fields Library contains all the fields you can add to a template to enable Contributor personalization.

For example, in a template designed for employee onboarding, you, as the Editor, might include input fields that enable the Contributor to include the following information in the video:

  • New hire's first name (to greet them personally in the video)
  • Manager's name (to introduce their team leader)
  • Department (e.g., Engineering, Finance, Marketing)
  • Office location (e.g., New York, Boston, Chicago)

You can also include input fields that allow Contributors to upload a media asset or record themselves directly in Amplify and have that recording included in the video.

Each template has its own dedicated Input Fields Library, so we recommend adding only the fields you need for each individual template. This article will familiarize you with the Input Fields Library and explain how to add fields, ensuring Contributors have the right options for personalizing content and making videos relevant to each viewer.

In our recommended process for creating a template, you'll typically add input fields after building the scenes and adding the content. However, you can also create the input fields first and then move on to the scenes and content. It's entirely up to you.

This article shows you how to create input fields; instructions for using them in scenes will be covered in a separate article.

Input Fields Library Structure

When you first access the Input Fields Library, it contains only system fields that are automatically created for each template. These system fields cannot be modified or deleted, as they are pre-built input fields that populate with information specific to each Contributor. The system fields include:

  • Contributor fields: These fields contain the Contributor's personal information. When a Contributor sets up their Amplify account, they enter their contact information which is then used to automatically populate any of these fields included in a template. The available contact information fields are:
    • First name
    • Full name
    • Job title
    • Email address
    • Phone number
    • Profile photo

In the example below, the Contributor full name, email address, phone number, and profile photo are used in a template designed for welcoming a new employee. When the video is created in Amplify, the fields are populated automatically with the Contributor's contact information.

  • Viewer fields: These input fields are derived automatically by SundaySky and can be used to personalize a video based on the recipient's device. They include:
    • Viewer Device
    • Viewer Mobile Device OS

Adding a New Input Field

In addition to the system fields that come with every template, you can add your own input fields to support the specific personalization you want to enable. As you build a template, consider which scenes you want to make customizable and add the corresponding fields to the library. These fields, when added to the template, let Contributors personalize the video, whether that's entering text, selecting from a predefined list, uploading a media asset, or recording themselves directly in Amplify to include a recording in the video.

There are four types of input fields you can add:

The next sections explain how to add each type and when to use them.

Free-form text

Use a free-form text field when Contributors need to enter details directly. This type is best for information that varies widely and doesn't fit into a predefined list of values.

1. Open the relevant template in the Studio.
2. Select Input Fields in the sidebar.
3. Click + Create Input Field at the top of the library.
4. From the drop-down list, select Free-form text.
5. Enter a name for the field.
  Start_date.png
6. (Optional) Select the Personally Identifiable Information checkbox if the input field will contain personally identifiable information, such as a person's full name. Refer to your organization's data use policy for guidance on what qualifies as PII.
▶ When this checkbox is selected, the field is excluded from analytics, and any related data is not stored.
7. Click Save.
▶ To create another input field without closing this window, select the Save and create another checkbox.
The field is added to the Input Fields Library.

Below is an example of how a free-form text field appears to Contributors in Amplify. After the Contributor types in the start date, it appears in the scene right away.

Multiple choice

Use a multiple choice field when you want Contributors to pick from a predefined list of values, such as department, office location, or employee role. This makes selection easier, ensures consistency, and prevents spelling or formatting errors.

1. Open the relevant template in the Studio.
2. Select Input Fields in the sidebar.
3. Click + Create Input Field at the top of the library.
4. From the drop-down list, select Multiple choice.
5. Enter a name for the field.

6. (Optional) Select the Personally Identifiable Information checkbox if the input field will contain personally identifiable information. Refer to your organization's data use policy for guidance on what qualifies as PII.
▶ When this checkbox is selected, the field is excluded from analytics, and any related data is not stored.
7. Type the values for the multiple choice field. Press ENTER or click + after each one to add all the values you need.

8. Click Save.
▶ To create another input field without closing this window, select the Save and create another checkbox.
The field and its values are added to the Input Fields Library.

Media upload

Use a media upload field to enable Contributors to add a media asset. For example, in an onboarding video, you might use a media upload field so that the Contributor can add a photo of the new hire's office.

1. Open the relevant template in the Studio.
2. Select Input Fields in the sidebar.
3. Click + Create Input Field at the top of the library.
4. From the drop-down list, select Media upload.
5. Enter a name for the field.

6. (Optional) Select the Personally Identifiable Information checkbox if the uploaded asset will contain personally identifiable information, such as a photo of an individual.

Recording input

Use a recording input field to enable Contributors to record themselves and include the recording in the video. For example, in an onboarding video, you might use a recording input field to let the Contributor add a welcome greeting for a new employee.

1. Open the relevant template in the Studio.
2. Select Input Fields in the sidebar.
3. Click + Create Input Field at the top of the library.
4. From the drop-down list, select Recording input.
5. Enter a name for the field.

6. (Optional) Select the Personally Identifiable Information checkbox if the recording will contain personally identifiable information, such as a Contributor's voice or image.

Editing an Input Field

Here are the key things to know about editing an input field:

  • You can change the name of any input field.
  • A free-form text field can be converted to a multiple choice field, but not the other way around. When converting a free-form text field, the field name remains and you only need to add the predefined values.
A multiple choice field cannot be converted to a free-form text field because it already contains several predefined values, and SundaySky cannot determine which one should become the single text field.
  • Media upload and recording input fields cannot be converted to another field type.
  • In a multiple choice field, you can add, remove, or rename values.
  • The Personally Identifiable Information option can be selected or deselected.

1. Open the relevant template in the Studio.
2. Select Input Fields in the sidebar.
3. Hover over the row of the input field you want to edit and then click the Edit icon at the end of the row.

4. Edit the input field as needed.
▶ In the example below, "Los Angeles" was added as an additional value.
  Edit_multiple_choice_field.png
5. Click Save.
  The input field is updated.

Deleting an Input Field

You can delete an input field only if it isn't used in any scene of the template. If it is, remove it from the relevant scenes before deleting the field.

1. Verify that the input field is not used in any scene.

2. Hover over the row of the input field you want to delete and then click the Delete icon at the end of the row.

3. If you are sure that you want to delete the input field, click Delete permanently.

  The input field is deleted.
