Overview
After adding a video asset to a placeholder, you may want to trim it to keep only the parts that are relevant to your story. In the Media Editor, there are three ways to do this:
- Use the trim tool to adjust the video directly.
- Adjust the video properties.
- If the asset includes additional elements, use the timeline to trim it.
Trimming removes footage from the beginning and end of a video asset, but not from the middle.
Using the Trim Tool
Use this method when you want to quickly set new start and end points by dragging the video's edges.
| 1. | Open the video asset in the Media Editor. Not sure how? Follow the steps in Accessing the Media Editor. |
| 2. | Click Trim on the toolbar. |
| 3. | Drag the handle on each side of the video timeline to trim off the unwanted parts. ▶ As you trim, you can preview your work by clicking the play button next to the video timeline. |
| 4. | Click Apply in the upper-right corner to save your changes. |
Trimming According to Video Properties
Use this method when you need to enter precise start and end times for your video asset.
| 1. | Open the video asset in the Media Editor. Not sure how? Follow the steps in Accessing the Media Editor. |
| 2. | Click Trim on the toolbar. |
| 3. | Manually enter the start and end times for the video footage you want to keep. If needed, include decimal values to set the timing with greater precision. ▶ As you trim, you can preview your work by clicking the play button next to the video timeline. |
| 4. | Click Apply in the upper-right corner to save your changes. |
Trimming a Video in the Timeline
Use this method when the video is part of a composite with other elements and needs to stay aligned with them. Because other elements are involved, trimming in the timeline is necessary, as you'll likely need to adjust the timing of surrounding elements afterward.
| 1. | Open the video asset in the Media Editor. Not sure how? Follow the steps in Accessing the Media Editor. |
| 2. | In the main (lowest) track, drag the handle at either end of the video timeline to trim the unwanted parts. |
| 3. | Adjust the elements in the other tracks to align with the video's new length. ▶ In the example below, there are two additional tracks: one for the shape and one for the text inside it. |
| 4. | Click Apply in the upper-right corner to save your changes. |
