About this article:
This article provides detailed guidance for step 6 of the template creation process: Configure Input Fields for Contributors.
Overview
After setting up the Input Fields Library, you can start using those fields in the template you're creating. Adding input fields lets you define which parts of a video can be customized later by Contributors—such as names, messages, or media assets. This step is central to creating a flexible and reusable template.
As an Editor, your task is not only to add input fields to scenes but also to configure them so that Contributors know exactly how to use them. You'll do this by adding fields from the template's library, applying personalization—either 1:1 or audience messaging—where needed, and defining the field's properties in the Input Form Builder.
Our template-creation guidelines recommend building your template by first adding the scenes and core content (step 4). This article therefore assumes that your content is already in place, and that in this step you are adding only the fields that Contributors will personalize. Of course, you can still add or adjust content as needed.
To illustrate each step, this article uses a real-life example: creating a template designed for Contributors to follow up after a sales meeting. The same process applies to any other template you build.
Configuring Input Fields Step by Step
Depending on your objectives for the scene, you can add the following types of input fields:
- Free-form text field
- Multiple choice field
- Media upload field
- Recording input field
- System (Contributor) field
Each type of field behaves differently. The sections that follow explain the purpose of each field and provide step-by-step instructions for adding them, using real-life examples to illustrate each case.
We recommend that you always preview the scene after configuring input fields to ensure they appear and function as intended for Contributors.
Configuring a Free-form Text Field
| Real-life example: Add an input field that allows the Contributor to greet the prospect in the opening scene. |
| 1. | Open the relevant template in the Studio. |
| 2. | Make sure that the input field you want to configure exists in the template's Input Fields Library. ▶ See Setting Up the Input Fields Library to learn how to create an input field. |
| 3. | Select the relevant scene. |
| 4. | Select the text placeholder to which you want to add the input field. |
| 5. | On the placeholder toolbar, click Edit. |
| 6. | Begin by entering the text that you want everyone to see. |
| 7. | In the text box, position the cursor where you want to insert the input field and then type a left curly bracket { . |
| All input fields belonging to this template are displayed in a drop-down list. | |
| 8. | Select the field you want to use for your message in this scene. |
| 9. | In the Fallback section, enter the text that will be displayed if the Contributor does not type the prospect's first name. ▶ The fallback text is used only when this field is not required (see step 13 below). If the field is marked as mandatory, the Contributor must enter a name to continue, so a fallback text is not needed. |
| 10. | Click anywhere outside the dialog window to close the window. |
| The Input Form Builder opens on the right side of the screen, showing the input field that was added to the scene. The Input Form Builder is used to define how this field will appear and behave for Contributors in Amplify. | |
| 11. | Review the Input Field label, which is what Contributors will see in Amplify and serves as guidance for what they need to enter in the field. In our example, the Contributor will see Prospect First Name by default beneath the field. Make the label as user-friendly as possible; here, it has been updated to Type your prospect's first name. |
| 12. | (Optional) In the Default text field, enter the text that should appear in the scene by default. In this example, the field will be used to enter the prospect's first name, which we cannot know in advance. Therefore, we will leave this field empty. |
| 13. | To make this field mandatory, select the Required checkbox. To make it optional, clear the checkbox. ▶ If the field is marked as mandatory, the Contributor will not be able to proceed in the video creation process in Amplify without entering the prospect's first name. |
| The text placeholder in the scene is updated to reflect the input field you configured. | |
| 14. | Click the play button in the Workspace to preview how the input field will appear and behave for Contributors in Amplify. |
| In the template's Input Fields Library, the Used in scenes column displays Scene 1, showing where this field is used in the template. | |
Configuring a Multiple Choice Field
| Real-life example: Add a multiple choice field to define the narration that the prospect will hear based on their industry. |
| 1. | Open the relevant template in the Studio. |
| 2. | Make sure that the input field you want to configure exists in the template's Input Fields Library. ▶ See Setting Up the Input Fields Library to learn how to create an input field. |
| 3. | Select the relevant scene. |
| 4. | Select the narration placeholder to which you want to add the input field. |
| 5. | On the placeholder toolbar, click the Edit narration icon |
| 6. | Because a multiple choice field is implemented using audience messaging, toggle Message by audience on. ▶ To learn more about using audience messaging, see Configuring Content Using Message by Audience. |
| 7. | Click the arrow to open the Set message by drop-down list. |
| 8. | From the drop-down list, select the input field you want Contributors to use to segment their viewers. ▶ In our example, the narration that viewers hear is determined by the industry in which they operate. ▶ Only input fields defined as Multiple choice are available for selection. |
| 9. | Select the value for which you want to create the first narration. |
| 10. | Type the narration that you want this audience to hear. |
| 11. | Click + Variation at the bottom of the dialog window to create the next audience variation. |
| 12. | Repeat steps 9-10 to select the value and type the narration. |
| 13. | Add more variations as needed. ▶ In our example, variations are created for the following industries: Generic, Financial Services, Technology, Healthcare, and Insurance. Each industry corresponds to a value in the Prospect Industry input field. |
| 14. | Type the fallback narration. This is the narration viewers will hear when the Contributor does not select any of the available multiple choice options. ▶ The fallback narration is used only when this field is not required (see step 18 below). If the field is marked as mandatory, the Contributor must select an industry to continue, so a fallback narration is not needed. |
| 15. | Click anywhere outside the Narration dialog window to close the window. |
| The Input Form Builder opens on the right side of the screen, showing the input field that was added to the scene. The Input Form Builder is used to define how this field will appear and behave for Contributors in Amplify. | |
| 16. | Review the Input Field label, which is what Contributors will see in Amplify and serves as guidance for what they need to enter in the field. In our example, the Contributor will see Prospect Industry by default beneath the field. Make the label as user-friendly as possible; here, it has been updated to Which industry does your prospect belong to? |
| 17. | In the Input Field display method setting, select whether you want the choices to appear in a drop-down list or as radio buttons. See Input Field Organization below for more information. |
| 18. | To make this field mandatory, select the Required checkbox. To make it optional, clear the checkbox. ▶ If the field is marked as mandatory, the Contributor will not be able to proceed in the video creation process in Amplify without selecting the prospect's industry. |
| The narration placeholder in the scene is updated to reflect the input field you configured. | |
| 19. | Click the play button in the Workspace to preview how the narration will sound based on the selected industry. |
| In the template's Input Fields Library, the Used in scenes column displays Scene 3, showing where this field is used in the template. | |
Configuring a Media Upload Field
| Real-life example: Add an input field that lets the Contributor upload the prospect company's logo. |
| 1. | Open the relevant template in the Studio. |
| 2. | Make sure that the input field you want to configure exists in the template's Input Fields Library. ▶ See Setting Up the Input Fields Library to learn how to create an input field. |
| 3. | Select the relevant scene. ▶ The scene must include a media placeholder. |
| 4. | Select the media placeholder to which you want to add the input field. |
| 5. | On the placeholder toolbar, click the Edit media icon |
| 6. | Select Media Upload. |
| 7. | Open the drop-down list and select the input field you want to use. ▶ Only input fields defined as Media upload are available for selection. |
| 8. | In the Fallback section, add the media asset that will appear if the Contributor does not upload one. This applies only when the field is not required (see step 12 below). If the field is required, the Contributor must upload a file. ▶ As a best practice, we recommend always uploading a fallback asset so Contributors can see in Amplify how the asset will appear in the placeholder. The display is determined by the media adjustment setting. By default, media assets use Scale media to fit but you, as the Editor, can change this to Scale media to fill. |
| 9. | Click anywhere outside the Media dialog window to close the window. |
| The Input Form Builder opens on the right side of the screen, showing the input field that was added to the scene. The Input Form Builder is used to define how this field will appear and behave for Contributors in Amplify. | |
| 10. | Review the Input Field label, which is what Contributors will see in Amplify and serves as guidance for what they need to enter in the field. In our example, the Contributor will see Prospect Logo by default beneath the field. Make the label as user-friendly as possible; here, it has been updated to Upload the prospect company's logo. |
| 11. | In the Files allowed in Input Field setting, select which media assets Contributors can upload: images only, videos only, or both. |
| 12. | To make this field mandatory, select the Required checkbox. To make it optional, clear the checkbox. ▶ If the field is marked as mandatory, the Contributor will not be able to proceed in the video creation process in Amplify without uploading a media asset. |
| The media placeholder in the scene is updated with the default media asset. | |
| 13. | Click the play button in the Workspace to preview how the input form will appear for Contributors. ▶ Depending on the types of media assets you allow, Contributors will see guidelines for supported file type and size specifications. |
| In the template's Input Fields Library, the Used in scenes column displays Scene 4, showing where this field is used in the template. | |
Configuring a Recording Input Field
| Real-life example: Add an input field that lets the Contributor record a short personal message for the prospect. |
| 4. | Make sure the narration placeholder for the scene is empty. ▶ This is important because any existing narration will play in the Amplify video alongside the recording, resulting in a poor viewer experience. |
| 5. | Select the media placeholder to which you want to add the input field. ▶ In the example below, the media placeholder occupies the entire scene. |
| 6. | On the placeholder toolbar, click the Edit media icon |
| 7. | Select Recording Field. |
| 8. | Open the drop-down list and select the input field you want to use. ▶ Only input fields defined as Recording input are available for selection. |
| 9. | In the Fallback section, add the video that will play if the Contributor does not record in Amplify or upload a recording. This applies only when the field is not required (see step 14 below). If the field is required, the Contributor must record or upload a file. ▶ As a best practice, we recommend always uploading a fallback video so Contributors can see how the video will appear in the placeholder in Amplify. |
| 10. | Click anywhere outside the Media dialog window to close the window. |
| The Input Form Builder opens on the right side of the screen, showing the input field that was added to the scene. The Input Form Builder is used to define how this field will appear and behave for Contributors in Amplify. | |
| 11. | Review the Input Field label, which is what Contributors will see in Amplify and serves as guidance for what they need to enter in the field. In our example, the Contributor will see Recap recording by default beneath the field. Make the label as user-friendly as possible; here, it has been updated to Record or upload your recap. |
| 12. |
(Optional) In the Recording instructions setting, enter instructions you want Contributors to follow when recording their message. Contributors will see these instructions in Amplify before they start recording. Click to see an example
1. Record in a quiet space to avoid background noise or interruptions. |
| 13. |
(Optional) In the Recording script setting, enter the script you want the Contributor to read while recording. In the script editor, you can use the available text editing tools to format the content. The script appears in the recording window in Amplify and scrolls automatically as the Contributor reads. Click to see an example
|
| 14. | To make this field mandatory, select the Required checkbox. To make it optional, clear the checkbox. ▶ If the field is marked as mandatory, the Contributor cannot proceed with the video creation process in Amplify without recording or uploading a recording. |
| 15. | Click the play button in the Workspace to preview how the input form will appear for Contributors. ▶ In the example below, both recording instructions and a recording script are provided for the Contributor. |
| In the template's Input Fields Library, the Used in scenes column displays Scene 2, showing where this field is used in the template. | |
Configuring a System Field
| Real-life example: Add system (Contributor) input fields to a scene that displays the Sales Associate's contact information. All fields are populated automatically based on the details the Contributor provides in Amplify. |
| 1. | Open the relevant template in the Studio. |
| 2. | Select the scene to which you want to add the system fields. |
| In this scene, the Contributor's photo will appear on the left. On the right, the scene will display their full name, followed by three bullet-point details: job title, email address, and phone number. The following steps explain how to add each type of placeholder. ▶ In the Scene Library, the scene shown below is titled 3 Bullets, Text Right. |
|
| 3. | Select the media placeholder on the left side of the scene. |
| 4. | On the placeholder toolbar, click the Edit media icon |
| 5. | Select Media Upload. |
| 6. | Open the drop-down list and select Contributor profile photo. |
| 7. | Click anywhere outside the Media dialog window to close the window. |
| 8. | Select the heading placeholder in which the Contributor's full name will appear. |
| 9. | On the placeholder toolbar, click Edit. |
| 10. | Type a left curly bracket { and then select Contributor full name from the drop-down list. |
| 11. | Click anywhere outside the Heading dialog window to close the window. |
| 12. | Select the first bullet placeholder and then click Edit on the placeholder toolbar. |
| 13. | Type a left curly bracket { and then select Contributor job title from the drop-down list. |
| 14. | Click anywhere outside the Bullet dialog window to close the window. |
| 15. | Repeat steps 12-14 for the remaining two bullet placeholders, selecting Contributor email address for the second and Contributor phone number for the third. |
| Below is how the scene will appear after completing the configurations described in this section. | |
| All the system fields added to the scene appear in the Input Form Builder. | |
| 16. | Expand each system field that was added and do the following: a. Edit the input field label, if needed. b. Specify whether the field is mandatory by selecting the Required checkbox. Keep in mind that these labels guide the Contributor on what each field represents. In this case, because the fields are automatically populated with the contact information the Contributor has already entered in Amplify, we recommend leaving the default labels unchanged. |
| Below is how the scene will appear in Amplify, once all fields are populated with the Contributor's contact information. | |
| In the template's Input Fields Library, the Used in scenes column displays Scene 5, showing where the system fields are used in the template. | |

Input Form Purpose
All the input fields you add to the template are collected into the input form. This is the form Contributors use in Amplify to personalize the video they send to their recipients. As the Editor, your goal is to make the form clear, intuitive, and easy for Contributors to complete.
Below is an example of an input form that reflects the input fields created in this article:
The fields Contributors complete in the input form—whether entering text, selecting from multiple choice options, or uploading media assets—are applied directly to the relevant scenes in the video. Whatever a Contributor defines in the form is automatically placed in the appropriate scene.
For example, if a Contributor selects Financial Services as the prospect's industry, that information can be used across multiple scenes. In one scene it may determine the narration; in another, it may define on-screen text.
Input Field Organization
| 1. | In the Input Form Builder, you can expand or collapse an individual input field's settings by clicking the arrow next to the field label. You can also expand or collapse all fields at once by selecting Expand all or Collapse all at the top of the Input Form Builder. | |||||||||||||||
| 2. | The order of the input fields in the Amplify form is determined by their arrangement in the Input Form Builder. To change the order, click and hold the drag handle (the white oval with three dots) next to the input field and then move it to the desired position. | |||||||||||||||
| 3. |
The way multiple choice fields are displayed in the input form depends on how many options you provide. The table below shows the default display for each case and the other display types you can choose if you want to adjust it:
|
|||||||||||||||
| 4. | When a multiple choice field uses a toggle display, you can set one of the options as the default selection. This makes it easier for the Contributor to complete the form. | |||||||||||||||
| 5. | At the bottom of each input field entry in the Input Form Builder, you can see how many scenes use that field. Hover over this text to view the exact scenes. | |||||||||||||||
Input Form Builder Errors
| 1. | If an input field's label is left blank, the field will not appear in the input form in Amplify. It also won't appear in the form preview. |
| 2. | An input field label must be unique. If two fields share the same label, neither one will appear in the Amplify input form or in the form preview. |
Notes
| 1. | After you add an input field to a scene, an icon appears next to the personalized placeholder. A personalization icon also appears on the scene thumbnail in the scene line-up. |
| 2. | If you'd like a refresher on configuring personalization—whether using 1:1 personalization or audience messaging—see the articles in the Configuring Content with Data section of the Help Center. |
