Overview

On-screen text translation extends AI narration translation to the text in a video. When a language is selected, the headings, subheadings, bullet text, footer text, and button labels switch to that language along with the narration.

For example, a video created in English and translated into German shows German narration and German on-screen text when a viewer selects German. An image can also be swapped for a German-specific version, so the visuals match the language as well.

On-screen text translation is turned on automatically for videos created after the feature was released. Videos created before then are not changed automatically, so videos already in use are never modified without your knowledge. See Translating Text in Existing Videos.

On-screen text is translated together with the narration, so the source language, AI voice, and approval steps work as described in Translating a Video into Multiple Languages with AI.

Supported Languages

A video can be translated into up to 15 additional languages, chosen from the following:

Bulgarian Finnish Japanese Slovak
Chinese (Simplified) French Korean Spanish
Chinese (Traditional) French (Canada) Malay Spanish (Mexico)
Croatian German Polish Swedish
Czech Greek Portuguese (Brazil) Tamil
Danish Hindi Portuguese (Portugal) Turkish
Dutch Indonesian Romanian Ukrainian
Filipino (Tagalog) Italian Russian

Adding Languages to a Video

1. Open the video in the Studio and click Languages in the sidebar.
▶ Alternatively, click the language selector in the top bar and then click Add more languages.
2. In the Languages panel, click Add up to 15 additional languages.
3. Select the languages you want to add.
4. Make sure Translate on-screen text is selected.
▶ This option is selected by default. If you clear it, only the narration is translated.
5. Click Enable video translation.
▶ If the brand font doesn't support one of the selected languages, a message warns you. See Choosing a Font for Translated Text.
A progress indicator is displayed while the languages are applied, followed by a confirmation message. You can return to the Languages panel at any time to add more languages.

Reviewing and Editing Translated Text

Translated text is generated with AI, so review each language before approving the video.

1. In the top bar, select a language from the language selector.
▶ The on-screen text and narration switch to the selected language.
2. Edit any text that needs adjusting while that language is selected.
▶ This edit applies to the selected language only.
3. (Optional) To compare the translation with the original, click Show source and select a language from the Video language list.

Note: Changing text in the source language overwrites any edits made to that same text in other languages. A message reminds you of this when you edit source text or narration. To avoid losing your edits, finalize the source text before reviewing the translations.

Choosing a Font for Translated Text

Not every font includes the characters needed for every language. Languages such as Japanese and Chinese in particular need a font that supports their characters. If the brand font doesn't support a language, the text appears as boxes or shapes when that language is selected.

1. Open the font list for the brand font.
▶ A warning icon appears next to fonts that may not support one of the video's languages, along with the languages affected.
2. Select a font that supports all the video's languages, and save it as the brand font.
▶ For example, Noto Sans supports Japanese.
▶ If no available font supports a language, click Add font to upload a custom font that does.
3. Select the language again from the language selector to confirm the text displays correctly.

Swapping Media by Language

An image or other media item can be replaced for a specific language, so viewers of that language see a different visual.

1. Click the image or media item, and then click Edit.
2. From the Video language list, select the language you want to change.
3. Drag the replacement image onto the existing image.
4. (Optional) Click Show source to compare the source-language image with the language-specific image side by side, or select the language from the top-bar language selector to preview it.

When you edit, replace, or remove media while the source language is selected, you're asked whether to apply the change to the source language only or to all languages. Make changes meant for every language in the source language, and changes meant for one language with that language selected.

Translating Text in Existing Videos

In videos created before on-screen text translation was released, adding a language translates the narration only. The on-screen text stays in the source language until you take one of the following actions:

a. Duplicate the video (fastest).
All text in the duplicated video is translated automatically. See Duplicating a Video.

b. Update text elements one at a time.
Edit a text element and make a change to its text. This translates that element into all of the video's languages. Repeat for each text element you want translated.

Limitations

  1. Videos that include an avatar cannot be translated. To translate the video, remove the avatar first.
  2. Templates support the source language only. If you save a translated video as a template, all additional languages are removed.

Credit Usage

AI usage credits for translation are calculated from narration and deducted only when the video is approved. Previewing and editing translations doesn't use credits. For how credits are calculated, see AI Usage Credits for Narration Translation.
